Panel discussion at the FIFDH: What future for International Geneva?

The SHRI is a partner of an evening event at the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH) in Geneva. On 10 March, a film screening followed by a roundtable discussion will explore the question: How can new momentum be given to multilateralism and the protection of human rights?

The evening, which will take place at the Geneva Graduate Institute, will begin with a screening of the film Solidarity by David Bernet. It will be followed by a keynote address by the SHRI on the importance of multilateralism for the protection of human rights in Switzerland, and then by a panel of experts.

What can Switzerland and Geneva contribute to global governance?

The principle of a rules-based international order is under severe strain. Along with it, multilateral mechanisms for the protection of human rights are faltering. As a central hub of multilateralism, International Geneva and its institutions are experiencing their most serious crisis to date. In addition to a financial crisis caused by funding cuts by the United States and other States, they face a crisis of legitimacy. Among the casualties are international human rights protection mechanisms.

How can a new lease of life be given to multilateralism and the protection of human rights? What can — or must — Switzerland and Geneva still contribute to global governance?

Find out on 10 March. Tickets may be purchased on the FIFDH website.

Following the screening of Solidarity and a keynote address by the SHRI, a panel of experts will address these questions:

  • Maarit Kohonen Sheriff, Director of Global Operations Division, OHCHR

  • Heba Aly, Coordinator of the Article 109 Coalition

  • Yves Daccord, President of Principles for Peace

  • Itonde Kakoma, President of Interpeace

  • Moderation: Davide Rodogno, Professor of International History and Politics at the Geneva Graduate Institute
